Nimble

Songs with a sprightly, light-footed quality

Is this playlist for me?

If you enjoy any of the following, this playlist may be worth checking out:

  • Vibrant pop music with elegant arrangements, intricate melodies and a buoyant quality that comes through in the rhythm.
  • Musical qualities like: light, delicate, jaunty and ethereal.

If I were just going to listen to one song, which should I pick?

Made in Heaven by Julia Cooper is a good place to start as it captures the delicate and springy quality of this playlist in its melody, arrangement and production.

What should I listen for?

Notice the sprightly, light-footed character that comes through in the rhythm, melody, sound-design and arrangement of these songs. Does it make your body want to move in any particular way? When you close your eyes, what imagery does it evoke?

If I like this playlist, what other ones should I check out?

This playlist emphasizes a quality of rhythmic “bounce” that is similar to Lilt. It differs in that the grooves in Nimble are tighter and more upright; they have more of a “walking on air” quality. The quality of the groove in Lilt is closer to the ground, rounder (rather than angular) and spread out. Lilt makes you “get down,” Nimble makes you flutter upwards.

Sinuous is another playlist that overlaps with Nimble. In both cases, the melodies are agile and skip around the beat. Nimble extends this quality beyond melodic phrasing to include sound-design and arrangements. While you may hear a distorted guitar in Sinuous, you’re more likely to hear plucked cello strings in Nimble

Nimble and Aerobic are similar in terms of the fast bounce of the rhythm–where it becomes almost like skipping or riding a pogo stick. Aerobic takes this in a more intense direction, adding emotional flavors of euphoria and relentlessness to the bounce. Nimble is more contained and has less of this “in your face” quality.

Lurch is the opposite end of the spectrum from Nimble, emphasizing thick, heavy sounds, a darker mood, destabilizing grooves and a plodding quality you might associate with the movement of very large things.

Both Nimble and Ascent emphasize a vertical movement. There is a “rising up” quality that shows up inwardly while listening. In Ascent this movement unfolds more slowly over the course of the song as it moves from verse to chorus and back. In Nimble, the movement is tighter and more rapid like the jeté of a ballet dancer.
